I'm on a budget right now, but using the skills I have to continue to make music.
Recorded with a Google Pixel 6a with the Recorder app from the OS.
Post-Processing such as EQing and limiting to acceptable streaming LUFS executed in the REAPER DAW.
ENGINEER NOTES:
- I mix with the master track peaking between -6 dB and -7 db, leaning towards -6
- I try to take care of effects like EQing, saturation, compression, during the mixing stage.
- I also do it in the mastering stage (I doubt it makes a difference)
- Will often use raw audio for upload.
- If intolerable sounds are present, I make adjustments accordingly during mixing or mastering (such applying a high pass filter cutting with a shelf at 69 hz to fix muffled bass)
- You can blow out speakers/subwoofers if you don't know what you're doing
I master between -11 and -12 LUFS typically.
Useless Babble (Side Notes)
Most would suggest to master at -8 LUFS for downloadable files as well as bandcamp and soundcloud files. Some will even master far louder than this universal estimate, and it ends up making dynamics from various different artists and even songs from one artist themself inconsistent. One song will be manageable, and the next will be so loud you have to cut your volume halfway. It happens!
Back to -8 LUFS, I am lazy and only export one final master track of each song at -11 LUFS. I don't see anything wrong with doing it this way, but some people get pretty meticulous with it.
I tend to use the more quiet version of whatever I'm finalizing, because most people have a large range of volume options to choose from when connecting to car or other type of Bluetooth or auxiliary connected speakers and they can always crank it louder.
This is how I mix and master my music. This is the typical formula I use for any genre. Different methods of creation and post-processing might be utilized from time to time, but overall the basic "template" remains the same. This is simply my opinion on how to do these things and others might work differently. This is simply the outcome of what I've learned over the years.
